Taco-me-oh-my-o! Taco-move-me-to-tears-o! I can't stop thinking about Tacomiendo.
Put simply, Tacomiendo is all that is good about Mexican food. Savory slow cooked beans, made-to-order hand tossed tortillas, ultra-marinated meats, and giant bottles of Mexican Coke … I didn't realize I was born in Mexico, but I've found my home.
Our GRUB buddies Chelsea T. and Tim T. just got back from a run through the Peace Corps in Guyana and backpacking through South America, but still there was an itch for authentic Mexican food that needed to be scratched. Bring in the visionary Mitch S. and his overwhelming excitement over the GRUB-worthiness that is Tacomiendo, and we had our Good Grub location lined up. So we rushed over to Culver City, crossed the border into what felt like the west side's version of Guadalajara, and came face-to-face with the window of tortillas flying in the air. I kid you not … they were flipping taco tortillas like it was pizza dough, each one coming out light and super fluffy. Most of us opted for burritos … but next time I'm going to be doing a round of tacos (okay, I'll still probably get a side of burrito … after all, this is The Good Grub).
I went for the carne asada burrito … deliciously charred, full of flavor, and stuffed into the aforementioned giant tortilla, loaded with creamy guacamole, whole pinto beans, and fluffy rice. Tim, wise beyond his years, decided on the adobada burrito … pork marinated to a bright, glorious orange … it was an instant favorite among the table. Chelsea was feeling adventurous and veered from the burrito path and launched herself into an massive mountain of carnitas nachos. I take that back, mountain can't even start to describe the ridiculousness of the pile of nachos facing our GRUB crew. We made a pretty good dent, and although we didn't win the battle, I honestly felt that we learned a lot about the beast. And next time we'll be ready. And trust me, the next time needs to happen now.
Everything was just super authentic and awesome about this place. It wasn't just the fact that the burritos were the size of your forearm … if you were Popeye ... it's more about the flavors, and freshness, and the general vibe of Tacomiendo. It has everything you want ... and some things that you didn't realize you can't live without. So gracias for the GRUB Tacomiendo, we'll be seeing you again soon, on this wild journey through GRUB.
