I like all sorts of dogs ... pugs, golden retrievers, Australian cattle dogs ... but I LOVE me some hot dogs. That juicy-pop, that smokey-goodness on a crispy bun ... that tasty concoction that reminds you of blistering summer days and jumping head first into the deep end of the pool ... and now that you can get it loaded up with a plethora of custom dog toppers and sauces, well ... CANNONBALL! So without further ado, we bring to you The Slaw Dogs ... a hot dog spot in Pasadena that's dishing out tasty dogs with a ton of make-you-weak-in-the-knees toppings. At The Slaw Dogs, as in most great things in life, it all starts with the delicious encased meats. I went for two ... because it's go big or go home hungry ... the Natural Casing "Snap Dog" (I've always been an al-nat-ur-al kind of guy) and the Spicy Calabrese Sausage. The Snap Dog delivered as advertised ... basically your traditional dog with a probably-subconsciously-induced "snap" … and the Calabrese came butterflied open, spread wide to accept the gracious toppings about to be bestowed upon it. Because that's really what The Slaw Dog's got going for it ... thirty or so topping options are up on a chalkboard behind the register … daring you to do your worst. As it's been documented, I've never done so well under pressure ... definitely more of a Buckner than a Gibson ... so as I tried to weave together two perfect hot dog combos, I pretty much decided to go with a game-time decision and wildly throwing out choices from the menu when I hit the front of the line. The Snap Dog got some habanero-pickled-onions, whole roasted garlic cloves, diced tomatoes, and curry ketchup, while the Calabrese took on some sport peppers, grilled onions, spicy mustard, and roasted garlic mayo. Sure I might have been the kid at the buffet that loaded up his plate with spaghetti, kung pao chicken, and a pancake … but sometimes throwing out some crazy combos just works … and believe you me, it worked like a charm. So as we matched up our scrum-didily-umptious masterpieces with a trifecta of crispy Belgian fries, savory sweet potato fries, and some thick-n-crunchy onion rings … I started secretly plotting my return and the new creations that I will make. Definitely got to get some slaw on my dog next time. And that's a great sign of some Good Grub … you're thinking about your return journey mid-bight. So see you soon The Slaw Dogs … we'll be back … and next time, we're using the diving board.
