Three words ... 1) Stuffed, 2) Potato, 3) Ball. That's it ... this post is done. Do you really need anything else!? Do we really need to go on? Do we really need to tell you more about these little morsels of joy? Well let's just say, pound-for-pound the potato ball is packing more deliciousness per square inch than anything else that would dare to step into the GRUB-ring. Take some fluffy mashed potatoes, wrap it around a core of seasoned ground beef, and if that wasn't enough, deep fry that sucker ... then you'll understand why my pants don't fit anymore. But pretty soon, you'll realize that I don't want them to fit if it means a life without Porto's. We're not exactly sure where the inspiration behind the potato ball came from, but if it's Cuban like the rest of the amazingness being served up at this legendary San Gabriel Valley Grub-spot, then I think I'm going to have to defect. Living in Cuba wouldn't be so bad ... a slew of slow-roasted pork sandwiches, sweet-and-savory cheese rolls, crispy fried plantains, melt-in-your-mouth potato balls ... oppressive government regimes ... okay, fine, I'll just stick to Porto's. And stick to it we will. Whenever we come to Porto's we get the easy decision out of the way up front and get at least one potato ball ... not only are they delicious (see above) but they give you them hot-n-fresh right as you place your order ... appetizers anyone? But then comes the hard part, which of their amazing sandwiches are we going to pick for the main course? Our GRUB-mates Heather B. and Ellen R. were on the hunt for some leafy options, going with a southwest grilled-chicken salad and the Porto's veggie sandwich... but for us, we were on the prowl for some good ol' meaty goodness. But there's so many to choose from ... Do we go with the steak torta loaded with guacamole, cojita cheese, and black beans? Or the Cubano with slow-roasted pork, ham, and swiss on a fresh baked Cuban roll (oh yeah, they're also an amazing bakery ... but we'll have to save that for another post)? Or should we just get down and dirty and take on the Papa Prepado ... a sandwich made entirely of ... wait for it ... wait for it ... potato balls. That's kind of the equivalent to winning the Loto ... on your birthday ... right after a Scarlett Johansson says yes to your wedding proposal. But on this day we were feeling a little frisky and went with the "What's your favorite?" We're always a little nervous when we ask the guys behind the register that question, because if I get the "Um, they're all pretty much equally good" it pretty much means "Dude, they're all pretty much equally garbage." But at Porto's we got a devilish grin that spread across Mr. Porto's face and a confident, strong, excited ... "Ropa Vieja." And blast off! Who knew Cuban-style-shredded-beef topped with grilled peppers, onions, a soothing layer of tomato sauce piled on some fresh baked Cuban bread could be so amazing?... Scratch that, who didn't know that could be amazing? And where can I find said person to beat them down like the dog that they are? So if you don't like awesome food ... you're probably not in the right place. But if you do, and you've got some fire in your belly ... well, put simply, the right place for GRUB is at Porto's.
