Behold the cold cut sandwich ... Delicious. Light. Flavorful. Refreshing ... GRUB. There are few things that can be so tasty. Especially a few days after Turkey Day. So go get a turkey sandwich, just make sure you load it up with ham, salami, and capacola ... and so we bring to you, one of Monrovia's finest ... Gene's Grinders. It was our first trip down to Gene's but it definitely won't be the last. Stepping up to the counter, we gazed up a the menu board, taking in our options ... would it be a meatball day? A pastrami dip day? Or shall we go the route of the cool n' crisp cold cut ... but which one? We've got a Good-Grub-Rule-of-Thumb ... if you go to a grub-spot and it's got a special with the establishment's namesake, you jump on it. Queue the "Gene's Special" ... a soft french roll, loaded up with tomatoes, shredded lettuce, dressing, a duo of provolone and american, and a quartet of the aforementioned Italian deli treats. Grab a dime bag of pepperoncinis, add to your order a bag of freshly fried, super-salty ... in a good way ... french fries, and prepare yourself for a belly-pleasing grub-session. Maybe even get a little saucy and throw in a large Pibb Extra (Mr. Pibb to the extreme!). Either way, just enjoy the lazy day and a delicious, fresh grinder, or if you're an Adam Sandler fan ... Hoagies and Grinders ... Hoagies and Grinders... Whatever you pleasure, Gene is sure to satisfy it. As we ate outside within ear shot of each fine patron ordering at the window, we just got the sense that everyone in Monrovia knows and loves Gene's. It's the "man-I've-been-coming-here-for-over-twenty-years" kind of place. Nothing crazy ... just good sandwiches, a mellow vibe, and some happy grubbers. So check it out, get a large or a small, get it plain or load it up with the fixins ... just make sure to get your GRUB on. 2 Comments |
